Free Trade Agreements (FTA) of Chile

Course summary Free Trade Agreement (FTA) Chile - Turkey

The Free Trade Agreement Chile-Turkey came into force on 01 March 2011. The Parties to this Agreement, "consistent with Article XXIV of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade 1994, hereby establish a free trade area."

The objectives of the Free Trade Agreement Chile-Turkey are:
a) to increase and enhance the economic cooperation between the Parties and raise the living standards of the people of the two countries;

b) to promote the expansion of trade through the harmonious development of the economic relations between the Parties;

c) to gradually eliminate difficulties and restrictions on trade in goods;

d) to contribute by the removal of barriers to trade, to the harmonious development and expansion of world trade; and
e) to provide fair conditions of competition in trade between the Parties.

The Agreement includes arrangements in many areas such as the removal of tariffs and non-tariff barriers in the trade between both parties; precautions about animal and plant health; intellectual, industrial and commercial property rights; origin rules; domestic taxation; structural adjustment; anti-damping; safeguard measures and balance of payments.

Chilean exports towards Turkey are concentrated mainly within two sectors (mining and industry), which account for 99.6% of total exports to Turkey. Although the mining sector has clearly been the dominant sector, its importance has been increasing throughout the decade, due to the copper exports to Turkey.

Turkey is the supplier of 0.12% of the imported goods to Chile, registering in 2006 imports of 36.7 million dollars.
