The Council of the Baltic Sea States is an political forum for
regional inter-governmental cooperation.
The Baltic Sea Region comprises 11 nations and more than 100 million
inhabitants. The Members of the Council of the
Baltic Sea States are the eleven states of the Baltic Sea Region as well as the
European Commission. The states are Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland,
Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Russia, Sweden and a representative from the
European Commission.
Currently the Council of the Baltic Sea States has designated ten countries with
Observer Status. These are Belarus, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania,
Slovakia, Spain, the Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the
United States of
America.
As eight of the eleven Baltic Sea countries are Members of the EU the framework
for cooperation has been widely extended, which represents a unique opportunity
to establish the Baltic Sea Region as the leading growth and trading centre in
the world.
