Description of the Sub-Subject: Djibril Tamsir Niane (Guinean historian).

The Guinean historian Djibril Tamsir Niane (Conakry, 9 January 1933) specialises in the History of Africa and Oral Tradition transmission in West Africa. He was the author of the “Epic of Sundiata.”

Djibril Tamsir Niane was the editor of the Volume IV (Africa from the 12th to the 16th Century) and author in Volume VIII (Africa since 1935. The Independence of the African Countries) of the General History of Africa of the UNESCO.

The Top Model and activist Katoucha Niane (1960 –2008) was the daughter of Djibril Tamsir Niane. When Katoucha Niane was nine years old, Djibril Niane consented to her sexual mutilation. She wrote her autobiography (In My Flesh) explaining her suffering. She founded the organisation “Katoucha for the battle against female circumcision.”
