Course summary India - Andean Community Trade Relations:

In 2009, trade between the Andean Community (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru) and India amounted to 1.519 million USD, which represents an increase of 1 percent over the previous year's trade (1,507 million dollars). In the last ten years the annual trade balance was unfavorable for the Andean Community. Andean exports to India totaled 568 million USD in 2009.

The main Andean exporter to India in 2009 was Colombia. Colombia's exports to India reached 449 million USD, an amount representing 79 percent of Andean exports to that country.

The Andean Community imports from India reached 951 million USD in 2009. Colombia is the Andean country with the largest level of imports from India. In 2009 the purchases of this country totaled 504 million USD.

The main items of India’s exports to Venezuela are pharmaceuticals, chemicals, calcinated petroleum coke, textiles and engineering products such as scooters, equipment and machinery. Venezuela has expressed interest in cooperation with India for import of relevant technologies and machinery for endogenous development projects in the country such as agro processing.

In June 2003, the Andean Community and the Republic of India established a Political Dialogue and Cooperation Mechanism for the purpose of strengthening and diversifying their friendship, understanding and cooperation and developing mutual trade and investment relations and cultural and scientific exchanges.

An agreement to establish a mechanism of political consultation and cooperation between India and CAN was signed during the visit of EAM to Lima in June 2003. A draft PTA / FTA agreement has been forwarded to the CAN Secretary General, but action on this may be delayed due to the various regional free trade agreements that are being negotiated by CAN countries.

India already has a preferential trade agreement (PTA) with the Mercosur bloc comprising Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay that came into effect in 2009 and covers around 900 products. A similar trade pact with Chile has been effective since 2007.
