Russia is a middle income country with a population of approximately 143 million people and a gross national income per capital of $7570 in 2007.

Russian culture has a long history and tradition and Russians are very proud of it. Russians consider themselves as a well educated nation. Russia has the highest educational level in the world (more than 40% of the total population have college or university degree).

More than 100 nationalities inhabit Russia, making it one of the most multinational states in the world. The country contains 32 ethnic divisions that are scattered throughout its territory.

Religion plays a prominent role in the public and spiritual life of today's Russia. The majority of Russians consider themselves as Christians, and belongs to Russian Orthodox Church. Russia adopted Christianity under Prince Vladimir of Kiev in 988, in a ceremony patterned on Byzantine rites. Russia's baptism laid the foundations for the rise of the Russian Orthodox Church. The Orthodox Church structure also differs in many ways from that of Catholics and Protestants.

Russian is the official language of Russia. It is also an official language of Belarus, Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan. Russian is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. Education in Russian is still a popular choice for both Russian as a second language and native speakers in Russia as well as many of the former Soviet republics.

Alcohol is a latent problem, the use and abuse of vodka and other drinks is very common in the lifestyles of the population. The Russian Federation and the chaotic process of privatization creates the difficulty of establishing the clear rules of the game for everybody and from there, comes the proliferation of pressure groups known as mafias.

Moscow is the capital and the largest city of Russia, and the largest city in Europe, with its metropolitan area ranking among the largest urban areas in the world. Moscow is the country's political, economic, religious, financial, educational and transportation centre.
