Course summary South Korea Free Trade Agreements (FTAs)
International Economic Relations. Korea has been actively taking part
in regional international gatherings: APEC©, ASEM and ASEAN. South Korea is
member of: Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) ©, Asia-Pacific Trade
Agreement (APTA). ASEAN Plus Three, Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC),
Boao Forum For Asia (BFA), Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC),
Asia Cooperation Dialogue (ACD), Asia - Middle East Dialogue (AMED), Asia-Europe
Economic Meeting (ASEM), Asian Development Bank (ADB), Economic Commission for
Latin America (ECLAC), Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP),
Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Colombo Plan ...
Free Trade Agreements (FTAs). Korea has also been negotiating free trade deals with
Canada,
Mexico, the
Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC),
Australia, New Zealand, Peru,
Colombia and
Turkey.
The groundwork is being laid for FTA negotiations with
China,
Japan,
MERCOSUR,
Russia, Israel and the
South African Customs
Union.
Since the establishment of the FTA Roadmap in 2003, Korea has actively
engaged in FTA negotiations with over 50 countries. So far, FTAs with
Chile, Singapore,
EFTA, ASEAN, India
and Peru have entered into force and the Korea - EU FTA has been
provisionally applied since July 1, 2011. The Korea - U.S. FTA was signed
in June 2007 followed by an agreement in December 2010.
Korea is currently negotiating FTAs with GCC, Australia, New Zealand,
Columbia, Canada, Turkey and Mexico.
Prior to launching official negotiations, Korea is conducting preparation talks
or joint research projects with prospective FTA partners including China, Japan,
MERCOSUR, Israel, Vietnam, Central-America, Malaysia and Indonesia. In
particular, China, Japan and Korea have been conducting a joint study for a
possible trilateral FTA among government officials, business and academic
participants since 2010, with an aim of concluding the joint study within 2011.
