The CARICOM - Costa Rica Free Trade Agreement (FTA) entered into force
between Costa Rica and Guyana on 30 April 2006, between Costa Rica and Barbados
on 1 August 2006, and between Costa Rica and Belize in February 2011.
The objectives of the CARICOM - Costa Rica Free Trade Agreement (FTA) are to:
(a) establish and develop a free trade area in accordance with its provisions;
(b) stimulate trade expansion and diversification between the Parties;
(c) eliminate barriers to trade and facilitate the cross-border movement of
goods and services between the territories of the Parties;
(d) promote conditions of fair competition in the free trade area;
(e) increase substantially investment opportunities in the territories of the
Parties;
(f) create effective procedures for the implementation and application of this
Agreement, for its joint administration and for the resolution of disputes;
(g) promote regional integration in the Americas and contribute to the
progressive elimination of barriers to trade and investment; and
(h) establish a framework for further bilateral, regional and multilateral
cooperation to expand and enhance the benefits of this Agreement.
In addition to trade in goods, the Agreement provides for the application of
Anti-Dumping Measures and for the Parties to enhance their Sanitary and
Phytosanitary Measures.
In 2009, Costa Rican exports to the CARICOM countries were U.S. $ 130
million. Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica - which has not yet ratified the treaty
- are the main destinations of Costa Rican exports to the CARICOM bloc.
